How to Get Ready for Skiing: Get In Shape
If you have an upcoming trip planned to Breckenridge, we can’t wait to see you on the slopes! However, we want you to have the best time possible! That means you need to start to get ready for skiing at least a couple weeks before your trip, but even a month is better. Here are some tried and true exercises to get ready for skiing, even if you’re not in the best shape. Give them a try for at least two weeks. You won’t be disappointed!
Below we share five different exercises that will help you get in shape. Do each one 10-15 times per leg, unless stated differently.
Step Downs
Stand at the bottom step of a set of stairs. Step down with your right foot, keeping your left foot on the stair. Then alternate by stepping down with your left foot and keeping your right foot on the stair. Keep alternating.
Towel Jumps
Roll up a bathroom towel and set it on the floor. Stand beside it. Now jump to the other side. Keep jumping back and forth over the towel. This will help you in getting ready for skiing for your upcoming vacation by getting your legs and hips prepared.
Leg Raises
Lay on your back on the floor with both feet flat on the floor. Raise one leg up as high as you can. Drop it down so it’s 2-3 inches from the ground, and then raise it again. Continue this 10-15 times per leg. You should feel a bit of a burn. That means you’re on your way to get ready for skiing! For added hip and pelvis flexibility on the slopes, do ten clockwise and ten counterclockwise circles with each leg as well.
Basic Plank
Get into the plank position as shown in the photo below. Hold this for 30 seconds, then relax. Do five sets to help strengthen your core so you are ready to tackle the slopes! This may be the hardest of the moves we tell you about today, but it’ll also be the most effective in helping you get ready for skiing.
Lunges
You know how these work. But in case you want a brief explanation, here’s a YouTube video to help you out.
These five exercises should help you get ready for skiing in no time! We are not doctors, but these exercises have definitely helped us feel more confident when we hit the slopes each year.
